My mother recently gave me a 'spoon?' that I think is used to impress a seal into wax such as they used on bulls or we use on wedding invitations today. The only thing, it looks like a spoon of some sort - ice tea mixer biggrin The handle is long, 7.5-8", hollow and cylindrical and soldered onto the spoon part. I couldn't even begin to tell you all the markings on the concave side but this part is perfectly round, approx. 1.5" diameter. The only thing that makes any sense to me is, if I am right.

What appears to be two angels opposite the handle. Written on the back side is Mexico then under that is ALPACA.

What has inclined me to the wax stamp thought is that there is something in the hollow of the handle where it attaches to the spoon that is reddish in color. I don't think I could get a scan of this in detail due to the small size. Do you know if there are such animals in existence that were used for sealing wax or documents?

I can only find spoons for melting the wax and then the traditional stamps for the impression. I may be way off track here.

Any ideas what this may be?

I have found that Alpaca is silver and my impression is that it equates to .975

Please post a photo of the object.

As it regards ALPACA, I am sorry to have to tell you it is not silver. Please see prior post What is "alpaca" or "alpacca"? (click here).

Well, that explains the metal content, at least.
