Hi there, I bought a large set of Austrian silver flatware a year ago at auction. While it has 14 different place pieces, it is only a place setting for 6. What I would like to know is what the two forks on the left side of the photo are used for? Is the one on the far left (5" long) a dessert fork, and the one next to it (5 3/4" long) a cocktail, salad, or fruit fork?. None of these pieces is delicate. The dinner fork on the right is 8" long.. Thanks for the help Marc IP: Logged |

My educated guess is that the fork on the far left is a modern day example of the ice-cream fork. I believe the one to the right of it is a salad fork. I am always intrigued by the variety of flatware designs and different place settings. I think the short tines of the ice-cream fork lend for it's use as a device to cleave the wedge of ice-cream. I think I might use it to break off a chunk of frozen cheese cake. I find forks to be the most tedious of items to make by hand. IP: Logged |

As it regards what Fredz is calling a salad fork: I have also heard it refereed to as a berry/fruit fork because of the long slender tines. IP: Logged |

Scott, I could never keep my forks straight. I am certain you are correct that the long thin tines are to skewer those elusive berries. Magazine Silver published an article about Arthur Stone flatware and it shows a picture of 18 piece place setting that Mr. Stone made for a client. I believe I could easily do well with a fraction of those at my table. IP: Logged |
