![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a dear little silver tea caddy which has an Oriental/Chinese stamp on the base. Has anyone seen this before and can they tell me anything about it please. I believe it is fairly old but that is all I really know. It measures 3" high and weighs 81.8 gms. Thank you! ![]() ![]() IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Are you certain that this is silver? Have you tested it or had it tested? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() yes, it has been tested as silver now and I still don't know anything about it! Getting kind of fond of it.... IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dear suefromoz, A similar mark is on a small enamelled lidded container, 33.2g, 35x30mm. The difference being three dots are under the first character, these are not shown in your example. Do not know maker, date or place from whence it came, though. Regards, Ozfred. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It looks like the mark pictured could be "sanwen" which is used as a Chinese name or surname. I guess that would narrow it down to a few billion people! Anyone here fluent in Chinese? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Our Chinese silver collecting neighbor tells me: This character does not have any meaning with respect to silver such as grade. There is no Chinese family name corresponding to this character; it is not a maker's name or signature. Standing alone the character means a traceable line pattern. It is used in combination with other characters to describe linear patterns such as wood grain, facial wrinkle or skin on a tiger or zebra. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hmmm, does this mean it is a "pseudo-Chinese hallmark"? [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 02-13-2003).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Our neighbor replies: It is not a pseudo character. It is written in a style characteristic of the early twentieth century. It is pronounced like the English word when. [This message has been edited by Bob and Carol Carnighan (edited 01-27-2003).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry to confuse things. I thought there were two characters and what looks like three horizontal lines on the left could be a "san", thus "sanwen". IP: Logged |
