I was hoping that someone here could help me ID this baby rattle. I only know that there is a stamp on the "ball" of the rattle that says "925". I do not see any other stamp on it. There are 2 small rattle balls inside the main ornate ball which spins on the handle. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Although your rattle is very attractive, I'm afraid it is probably also quite modern. 925 indicates that the piece is sterling silver, or 925/1000 pure. Items marked simply 925 USUALLY date from the post WW II era, and many brand new items are marked this way. The main exceptions are some American pieces made from the 1850's to 1870's, during the transition from the coin standard to the sterling standard. Your piece doesn't look quite that old.

Without any other marks, it is difficult to say where it might have been made. It could be from Mexico, Italy, the Far East, or almost anywhere else where there are no rigid hallmarking laws.

I hope this helps. It is a very nice looking piece, and it appears to be of good quality; I just don't think it is very old.

It does look like it has some age to it, but as a more general comment I wonder if a lot of items that are only marked 925 aren't repros like those little stamp boxes that I was fooled by 7 or 8 years ago?

dnsxtn,
A story that has been around for sometime is items being reproduced, in the Orient, for dealers who know there is a market niche. Some mention Indonesia as one possible source, this could have an element of truth, considering the Balinese expertise in silver.
Another case of caveat emptor!
