I've recently become interested in estate silver flatware. I've been eavesdropping on some of your posts and really appreciate the knowledge you all are so willing to share. The info on trademarks has been particularly helpful, as an elderly cousin recently passed her silver flatware collection on to me... I've been watching sales and surfing for retail shops on the web. Where else would you suggest I go to find pieces AND to become better educated? The patterns that have charmed me so far include Gorham Corinthian, Wallace Waverly, Whiting Violet, Dominick & Haff Louis XIV and Gorham Meadow. Thanks for any advice you may offer... IP: Logged |

Ah, another silver convert. I love it! Glad you found our site and look forward to your participation. As to your question about educating yourself on the topic, there are a number of options. Ebay is certainly a good place to start. It will give you an idea of what the current market is. There is something, though, about touching and seeing pieces of silver in person. Unfortunatley, a lot of the more interesting silver has gone the route of Ebay instead of local shops, but the local search can still be fun and educational. We look for silver wherever we go. It is great fun and we have met so many interesting people. Talk to other silverphiles. There is a lot of information that can be gleaned from casual conversation. And finally, invest in some good silver reference books. You might check out the Silver Library at this site to get an idea of what books cover your specific area of interest. Good luck and enjoy the hunt! IP: Logged |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by June Martin: There is something, though, about touching and seeing pieces of silver in person. [quote] My sentiment exactly! I definitely prefer the sheen and texture and heft of certain pieces to others. Oh, for better silver shops locally... I'll check out the recommended reading lists, too. IP: Logged |

I too prefer seeing silver in person, as I have a love of hotel silver, primarily because of its weight. You just cannot tell how a piece feels in your hand without being there. Am adding my thanks to all on this site for their shared interest and education. Janice IP: Logged |
