[01-0923]

My mom recently sold her house of which she had lived for 30 years. When my grandmother died she gave my mom everything of hers. Grandmother had lived in her home for 60 years. We started un-boxing things from my grandmothers boxes during my mothers move and found tons of silver pieces. I would like to know something about them. some have marks and some do not. One of the trays says Dieu Aide with a lion roaring above the markings.

Does any one know about this Dieu Co.??
How do I get them cleaned --they are nasty, well very tarnished!!

In French Dieu Aide loosely translates to God Helps.

The mark looks similar to the Sacket & Company Ltd mark that is in Rainwater.
What does everyone else think?

Cleaning very tarnished silver can be difficult. You might not want to rush to clean the silver. In some cases the tarnish can be helpful in determining the construction, hard to see marks, etc.

Everyone has their favorite cleaning methods and aids. The tranished object and its condition will also have a bearing on the best approach. Take a look at this prior post for some cleaning/polishing suggestions.

Rainwater is shorthand for The Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufactures by Dorothy Rainwater and Judy Redfield.

The mark, with the motto, looks more like a family crest or a pseudo one. How large is it and were is it on the piece?

The tray is a large one. It measures 22 inches long, by 15 inches wide. 3 inches high, and weighs 5.5 lbs. The Lion with the logo is right in the center of the top of the tray. Not on the bottom. You may be right. Never thought of a family crest stamp. Thanks.

Given the substantial size and the crest, which looks well cut, I would look closely for marks -- they may be quite small -- along the bead edge and across the bottom. It may help to hold it slightly obliquely to a light.

That is a crest with motto. It looks hand engraved. Try 'huffing' on it to see if you can see a line around it. It may be old sheffield plate or even late 19c electroplate, but could be solid silver. Sometimes the marks are hard to find, you almost need a magnifying glass and have to go over every inch of the piece. Does any copper show through?
