There are no comprehensive guides -- those that claim to be are better used as doorstops. Your best first stop is the library list on this site: Starting a Library on Silver If you plan to cover the whole spectrum, buy every book in sight (even the aforementioned doorstops can contain a glimmer or two) and read, read, read. Be prepared, however, to spend money; the best references now claim as much as the pieces they cover. If you have a particular interest, you will have a somewhat easier row to hoe, but a good general grounding is all to the better. At the top of my list I would put Pickford's Silver Flatware, Fale's Early American Silver, Rainwater's American Silver Manufacturers, Ensko's American Silversmiths and Their Marks, and Tardy's International Hallmarks on Silver. That will give you a bare start. There are no price guides that even rise to the level of doorstop. IP: Logged |

I couldn't agree with wev more. There is no single comprehensive reference for silver. It is too large a field. Also, the price guides are generally not worth a dime. However, there is a book listed in this site's Silver Library by Peter Waldron called The Price Guide to Antique Silver. I would ignore the price guide aspect but it does give good background info for those new to silver. It breaks items into categories and talks about the concept of hallmarks and fakes. It is a good starting point and a handy reference going forward. It is written from an English viewpoint, but I think most of the info is relevant to all areas of silver.
