I received a very cool martini shaker and six champagne glass-shaped glasses in a hammered texture. I don't think it is true silver, probably nickel or chrome. The maker that is stamped on each piece is Continental Silver. Can anyone give me some info? Thank you very much, IP: Logged |

Hi Robert, Continental Silver was originally a silver plate manufacturer that started making nice quality hammered aluminum pieces. They're well known for their chrysanthemum pattern. They also made some chrome plated pieces (some with bakelite handles), perhaps that's what yours is, can't really picture stemmed glasses in hammered aluminum. Cheryl IP: Logged |

Cheryl is right. Continental is mainly known for their aluminum, but they did make a lot of objects in other metals. Unlike Cheryl, though, I have seen aluminum stemmed glasses, so I wouldn't rule out aluminum unless the glasses seem too heavy. Can you describe the mark in more detail (shape, wording, logos, etc? That might give us a better idea of what we are looking at. Continental aluminum pieces are often have the mark in a horseshoe shape with a Minuteman figure within. Many are also marked "Silverlook". I have found that aluminum, silver, chrome, pewter and other silvery metals usually are easy to tell apart once they have been used and have had a chance to oxidize. When pieces are unused and highly polished, it can be harder to tell the difference immediately. Brent IP: Logged |
