Anyone living in Hartford Conn who is ready/willing/able to go down to Historical Society and photocopy patterns & inventory numbers on at least the Coffee/Tea & Water Sets for each year -- then post photocopies to this Forum for all to see?

RE: Connecticut Historical Society Web Site.

Dear Art --

We have the following catalogs of the Meriden Britannia Company: 1881, 1847, 1888, 1871, 1874, 1876, 1878, 1879, 1882, 1885, 890, 1867, and 1893. They can not be copied in their entirety because of copyright restrictions, however. I can copy a couple of pages for you, though, and they are available here for researching.

Anyone know: Do Copyright rights last over 100 years?

They are all long out of copyright unless the society has someone's re-print editions, in which case only additional editorial matter is protected. Copy every page, build some PDF's and post them up.

At least 15% of the questions I get asked are about Meriden silver. What a great service if someone were to compile all the catalogues into a single volume and publish them for everyones use.

This is a great post! We can at least direct folks to the Historical Society so they can research it themselves. I know I will not be going to Connecticut anytime soon.

I assume that the "1847" catalog is a flatware catalog from a later year -- and maybe the "890" should be "1890"?

Here is the latest: Historical won't photocopy, FAX, or digitize the Catalogs. I revisited their Web Site. There are 3 original catalogs currently at auction. Very expensive.

RE: Meriden Britannia Trade Catalogs

Dear Patron:

I understand what your needs are, but unfortunately, your request is outside the scope of what we can do because of staff and time constraints.

We can send them out to be microfilmed, but that would involve the cost of photographing from scratch as there are no negatives, as well as making two positives, one for you and one for us, which is the policy.

I am sorry not to be of more help, but we are mainly set up as a research library on-site.

Thank you for your eMail.
Do you plan to digitize and post the catalogs on-line in the future?

Have you actually asked how much they would charge for this? I think several of us would probably like to have copies of those, and if they would do multiple copies (with of course one copy for themselves) it might lower the cost.

Would it be possible to contact a temporary help agency in Meriden to see what it would cost to pay someone with secretarial skills to do the work? If enough people committed and paid in advance, the cost might be reasonable. This could provide copies for everyone who subscribes. Just a thought. Dale

An original hard cover 194 pp 13" x 17" 1871 Meriden Britannia Catalog was just bid to $901.00 ! I can see , with (1) catalog @ 194 pages with hard cover. Sharon would not want to undertake the task. No telling how many pages in the other ( 12 ) catalogs. Need someone in Meriden to meet 1-on-1 with Sharon or Library Director to deterine details of what the Library will do and won't do in getting catalogs FAX'ed, photocopied, digitalized. I get the impresion they don't even have a photocopy machine and they are just a depository / storage area for old printed matter financed with charitable donations.

I asked Sharon to name her price for Fax, photocopy or expense to digitalize (scan) catalog pages to a web site. She never quoted a price saying the project was beyond the scope of time and staff constraints. If all the catalogs are hard cover and in the range of 100-200 pages, it would be time consuming . Also, to photocopy or scan each page of a hard cover catalog would probably break the "back" /binding on a 100 year old book. I think that is why she initally suggested microfilming the catalogs.
