I am looking for resources to help identify the origin of a silver or silver plated piece. The marking on the bottom has a 'J' and an 'F' in separate triangles connected to either side of a diamond with a crown in the middle. Any help is appreciated.

The mark you described is a mark of the Friedman Silver Co, Inc. of Brooklyn, New York. The company was founded in 1908 and bought by the Gorham Corporation in 1960.

According to Rainwater, "Much of their holloware bore pastoral Dutch designs."

What is the "piece"?
Any other marks on it?

The piece is a pedestal bowl with handles. It has a raised floral applique on the front. The only other marking on the bottom is a number. Any ideas on how to research this further are appreciated.

1. Posting photos might be a good first step. You're talking about something made between 1908 and maybe 1960. Someone may be able to narrow down the date based on the style of the bowl or the marks.

2. Try and locate any original catalogs published by Friedman. I am not aware of any reproductions. The Brooklyn Historical Society or Brooklyn Public Library might be good places to begin that search.

3. Check with the Gorham Archives at Brown University to see if any Friedman information is located there, or if they have any ideas about how you might research Friedman.

4. Research trade publications and consumer publications of the appropriate vintage once you have a better idea of when the item was made.

Good luck, let us know what you find out!

Gorham can be contacted at 1.800.446.7426. Might be worth a try.
