I hope to go to the assay office in France armed with the questions that we need answered. Since I have never actually worked with silver I feel that I need some imput from the moderators or anyone else with interest in the french rules, regulations and standards. I'll delay this field trip a few days as I get my questions ready. I'm pretty confident that I can talk my way in with questions at least once, but who knows if I'll talk them into a second chance. Questions anyone? ------------------ IP: Logged |

How and where does one get copies of the French government documents related to the marking of silverplated wares? IP: Logged |

At this point in time, I have to limit myself to ask questions that are dogging me on silverplate. They fall into two categories: a) the new standard (1983), and b) any previous standards; we know that the square mark for plated articles was introduced as far back as the revolution (at that time physically plated) and it's inconceivable that there weren't any more laws since then until 1983. Since this all deals with silverplate I'll post it in that forum when I get my notes down to manageable size. May I suggest that you also complete reading the 75 page document; there may be question arising there that might best be asked of the government people. If you feel like discussing any issues you encounter, well we are waiting for you. IP: Logged |

My guess is that I am the only French citizen on this forum. Bonne Chance! That comes from someone who actually got a cash refund from FNAC. I admire your optimism. If you actually get in the door (I must say I actually went to the branch of the government that handles French living abroad and was told on the phone the reason I could not get in the door was that they are not open to the public) you should ask very precisely for information on plated ware, everything else is published. A few years back a French curator asked how I knew so much about what the Ville de Paris (an 18th century vessel of war) since he could not get find any drawings, etc of it. He used the wrong word in his request so the civil servant (a joke in French) said there was no such thing. i am waiting with great expectation for the results of this visit. Maurice IP: Logged |

... a cash refund from a store here? Pas possible! I'm still optimistic, Maurice. After 4 years here, I think I can (I think I can. I think I can...)talk my way in. Though not a french citizen per se, the name Dandeneau and mon nom de jeune fille "Dubois" help a lot! I will take your advice seriously and try to be precise about just the plated stuff. Merci! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have a decent list of questions by now. My plan is to start at the auction house in Paris on Thurs. I have an informal class there On June 5th - then set I'll up the tour of Christofle. I plan to go to the assay office once the other two have answered what they could... and when the Métro's not on strike Last chance for questions... Anyone? ------------------ [This message has been edited by doobees (edited 06-03-2003).] IP: Logged |
