[01-1204] I'm new to silver collecting and have recently acquired a piece with a mark that I can not identify. I've looked in several reference books and on the internet without success. Can anyone help?
Here it is - a silver/glass dish/basket or whatever you want to call it. IP: Logged |

The mark doesn't mean anything to me, but stylistically, it looks a lot like a number of modern silverplated white metal reproductions that I've seen coming out of China and other parts of Asia. Check the underside carefully. In these reproduction castings, they often don't clean up the underside as well, and rough spots will remain that are usually an indication of a lower quality product. It's pretty and would be nice for using, I'm sure. I can say that if you love it, you didn't get beat. If you bought it because you want to establish an asset base, you might find it a loss. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone else has some more positive information to give you. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Your mark has appeared on similar Dutch style pieces in this forum - but also without positive identification. See: Unknown mark for Fancy Silver Vase IP: Logged |

Thanks for pointing me to the other forum. The relief style is virtually identical. Looks like they are from the same maker - whoever that might be. IP: Logged |

I've seen lots of these "Dutch style" silverplate pieces--there was an entire line of tableware made in this style, including candlesticks, vases, and platters and trays with the chased "Dutch" border. You could set an entire table in the Dutch style! I'm racking my brain and think most of them were marked by the E.G. Webster Co. or Barbour Silver Co with the half moon trademark. They must have been made in the late 1920's and 1930's, maybe into the 1940's. I've never seen any marked K S that I remember, but maybe that company was an offshoot of Webster/Barbour or a retailer. I came across some Dutch style hollowware pieces some time back that dated to the late 19th century, when the style was in vogue apparently for a short while. Fashions come and go and it can be very hard to date some styles because they resurface. Styles often skip two generations before coming back. What Mama had is often out of style while what Grandma had is in! ;-D ------------------ IP: Logged |

Just to widen the search area for Dutch-style pieces, this crumber set was recently online: According to the seller, it is marked "silver plated, made in Japan". IP: Logged |
