Hi,

What a great site! I was referred by an seller when he wasn't able to help. I got to talking with a lady at a local estate sale and she brought out this spoon and asked me what it was used for. She wants to leave it for her daughter but would like to at least be able to tell her what it is.

After a fruitless trip to the local antique mall, I decided to try online. It has the word FRANCE stamped on it, and the rod in the center acts like a plunger for the spoon bowl- maybe it was used to drain something before serving? I don't know how old it is.

Thank you for any assistance!

This appears to be used to serve pretty much anything spoonable. My impression is that it is a commercial/ restaurant piece. I base this on several I have had over the years. There is also a device where 2 forks are hinged together, a kind of flat server with a sweep to clear it and forks where a piece moves food off. My guess is these are still being made. If they aren't, they should be. As far as I know silver pieces like this have been around a long time. They are invariable plated.

Actually, it looks like half a professional spoon player's kit. Add another spoon and see what sort of action you get from the spring and rod.

Thanks! I'm going to try searching from the spoon players point of view- maybe that explains why the antique store drew a blank. The spoon doesn't really look that old anyway.
Thanks again,
JB
