Hello all,

Here is a bit of a puzzler! We have a silver-mounted tapered wooden Stick/Baton/Wand. The tip has a silver cap marked "REED & BARTON / STERLING",and the butt end has a silver ferrule monogrammed "RR" on the side and stamped "RUN FOR YOU LIFE" on the top.

I am not sure what to call this thing. It is a bit heavy and wide for a musical conductor's baton. I was thinking it might be a magician's wand, but I can't find any secret compartments:-). I have a feeling that this was a special presentation item for "RR", and "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE" must have some sort of significance. Google has not helped, to date. Any ideas about this mystery item?

Brent

What's the size? 14"? I'm thinking it might be a drill sargent's/officer's baton, a presentation piece?

Just a guess: a batton used in a relay race (hence "run for your life"), perhaps a school prize event or military academy etc.

Hi,

Sorry for the LONG delay in responding. It is indeed 14 inches long. The officer's baton sounds like a plausible idea, but I must admit I have never seen one. Can anyone point me to another example? Thanks!

Not likely a relay baton, as they are not tapered and would not be that long (one could poke oneself while running!).

My vote:

Conductor's wand (aka baton or pointer)

Here is one in Ebony

It may be a military officer's swagger stick, a kind of ornamental accompaniment for a uniform.

Jersey wins the prize. One currently for sale on the internet comes complete with velvet case and original cardboard packaging. According to the packaging, it is the "X96 jogging stick" so there can be no doubt.

According to the seller, it was meant to ward off dogs while jogging!
