[01-1550, 01-0701] Hello: I believe this is a Victorian Bride's Basket in the Repousse style. Am I correct? How should it be cleaned? Is TarnX an option? Thanks,

I've already washed the basket in mild dish detergent and used a soft toothbrush to remove the build up in the detail. Still needs to be polished though and would like to hear the experts' suggestions. IP: Logged |

Use the forum search function and you will find several prior discussions about cleaning and polishing. For example: Silver Care (Polishing/Cleaning)

Well, I cleaned some of it using TarnX. The grapes show significant silver loss. I might have it replated. IP: Logged |

Tarn-X isn't always the best cleaning product for silver. It contains sulfur and is extremely harsh--it can actually eat away at some delicate gemstones if you are using it for jewelry. Also because it is a liquid, it really gets into all of the nooks and crannies and removes oxidation from age or from the factory, which is what often gives intricate silver patterns their definition and contrast. As for your dish, it might not in the repousse style. Repousse means pushing out a design from the back. I can't tell if your grapes are stamped from the piece itself, or if they are applied separately. THe other decoration seems to be engraved. This kind of silverplate often wears almost completely off and all you see is the pewter-like color of the base metal. This seems to be the case for your dish. This can't be polished to resemble silver again, heavy polishing will only wear the decoration. It can be replated if you want it to look like very bright, new silverplate. But the motif and form were popular so you might be better off looking for a replacement that hasn't lost its finish, rather than going thru the expensive replating process.
