I have a couple of English salt and pepper sets (30s, deco, silverplate) nothing special but nice design. Each set has one piece with a single large hole and the other with multiple small holes. My question is which is the salt and which is the pepper? And while I'm on the subject, what is the American convention - where both pieces have multiple holes, but they're larger on one than on the other? Thanks, -Mark IP: Logged |

The English convention is that the salt is the one with a single hole, and the pepper is the one with multiple holes. As for American, the larger holed piece is for salt and the smaller holed piece is for pepper-since pepper is ground more finely than salt. IP: Logged |
