There are lots of sites that can tell you how to clean your silver to a beautiful shine, but I can't seem to find any info about adding tarnish/oxidation to your silver. I inherited a very large set (160+ pieces of flatware and several pieces of holloware) of Stieff "Rose" many years ago. It has been in my family since about the time of World War I. Since it's a repousse-type design, the crevices around all the flowers became dark with time, beautifully setting off the design. Last week, my house cleaner wanted to do me a special favor by polishing all my sterling flatware and holloware. You guessed it. :-( She got hold of some TarnX and Wright's Silver Cream, and now it all looks like it was made last week. I can't be angry with her, because she really meant well, but I don't want new or new-looking silver. I want my antique Stieff Rose back! Does anyone know if the dark crevice oxidation can be re-introduced at home, or is it a candidate for the silversmith? I don't think I'll live long enough for it to re-establish with time! Can you help? Thanks, IP: Logged |

Many thanks for your assistance. I can see I didn't look hard enough in previous Forum subjects. Thanks again, IP: Logged |

For some reason I've never had great results with the "instant" tarnish approach and while it looks better than no tarnish, it just doesn't quite get the look of a real patina that has accumulated over the years. I think it has something to do with both the color and the gradations that you get with a real patina. An "instant" patina just doesn't look the same to me. IP: Logged |
