There are lots of sites that can tell you how to clean your silver to a beautiful shine, but I can't seem to find any info about adding tarnish/oxidation to your silver.

I inherited a very large set (160+ pieces of flatware and several pieces of holloware) of Stieff "Rose" many years ago. It has been in my family since about the time of World War I. Since it's a repousse-type design, the crevices around all the flowers became dark with time, beautifully setting off the design.

Last week, my house cleaner wanted to do me a special favor by polishing all my sterling flatware and holloware. You guessed it. :-( She got hold of some TarnX and Wright's Silver Cream, and now it all looks like it was made last week. I can't be angry with her, because she really meant well, but I don't want new or new-looking silver. I want my antique Stieff Rose back!

Does anyone know if the dark crevice oxidation can be re-introduced at home, or is it a candidate for the silversmith? I don't think I'll live long enough for it to re-establish with time! Can you help?

Thanks,
Jim

Many thanks for your assistance. I can see I didn't look hard enough in previous Forum subjects.

Thanks again,

For some reason I've never had great results with the "instant" tarnish approach and while it looks better than no tarnish, it just doesn't quite get the look of a real patina that has accumulated over the years. I think it has something to do with both the color and the gradations that you get with a real patina. An "instant" patina just doesn't look the same to me.
