Hi,

Thank you for having this wonderful site!

I acquired a beautiful silver tea/coffee service at an auction several years ago. Last week, I loaned my set to a dear friend for a 25th anniversary party. Somehow, one of the finials (the one on the teapot) was broken off and lost! I was heartsick! I do not know the maker, or anything about this set, except that I love it! I thought if I could find out what the hallmarks say, I would see if I might find another finial and have my teapot repaired. I have purchased a book, "The Book of Old Silver" but was not able to find what I think I need to know!

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!
Linda

In general, in response to your question yes it is possible for an experienced silversmith to put on a new finial, but it won't likely be identical to the one that was there originally. You can have a exact replacement of the finial made if you have a photo of what it originally had, but you should expect to pay a highly skilled silver smith a substantial amount for their time and expertise for such a repair.

I had a similar problem and a silversmith cast a copy of the finial from the sugar bowl which made the set virtually perfect. Only the screw was noticably different.

Hope this helps.
