This past week we met some folks from the US Coast Guard when they took a break from their HLS meeting. Of course we turned the conversation to silver. We eventually mentioned that we were familiar with the Navy's battleship silver but had never seen or heard about Coast Guard silver. They hadn't either but felt that since the Coast Guards traditions go back further (to 1790) than the Navy, then there must be. They took our card and said that they would pass the inquiry onto the Coast Guard historian. If we hear anything we will let you know. I did a very quick search of the Coast Guards' website but found nothing specific about Coast Guard silver or silver service (other than medals/awards and embroidery in uniforms). I did find this mention:
quote: The document is so large I didn't have the time to download all of it; so I haven't found out what they mean by "disposed of in accordance with procedures in enclosure (36)." But this would seem to indicate that there was (is) Coast Guard silver. Does anyone have anything to share on the subject of Coast Guard silver? IP: Logged |

"Silver Service Furnishings" could refer to daily use Government issue tableware as well, especially since it includes "shore units." We have all encountered Kings Pattern flatware marked "USN." And then there is this:for another branch of service. IP: Logged |
