Is this the creepiest post of the week?

I bought a sweet old sterling spoon at a flea market because it has my mother's initials as a monogram. Unfortunately, it also had the remains of something scary cooked into the bowl. I think somebody may have used it to prepare a drug fix.

I polished it with Simichrome, but there's a stubborn, blotchy, matte aluminum-colored stain left in the bowl.

Any idea how to get this stain out? Will elbow grease eventually do it?

And just for the record--I don't take drugs! I don't even drink coffee! It wasn't me, I swear!

Thanks in advance.

Polly, in order of harshness, polish, polish w/ a matchstick or wood, 0000 steel wool, 600 emery paper. If it is still hanging in there give it to a profesional!
Good luck.

Wal-mart carries this spray stuff i forgot the name it's like goo-off the stuff that removes adhesives and stains-but,this stuff is a wonder product. It is in the cleaning aisle next to the goo-off? stuff its in a spray bottle and it's orange in color - first it's all natural like citrus oils and stuff it cost less then $4. - and it removes everything. For the price even if it don't work you will find lots of other uses for it too + it smells good! I would spray the bowl of the spoon and let it sit for a while even overnight - it should work. In the past before I knew of this product I had purchased a Tiffany sterling serving spoon in which some "addict" had "cooked" cocaine in it. I had to basically finely "wet" sand the bowl with the finest sandpaper [the black kind] and then used a Dremel with a metal buffing attachment to bring back the luster and finish. It was a long process but, was well worth it when i had only paid out a total of $10 in materials that included the price of the spoon too. In which I later sold for over $100.- so your spoon can be fixed by yourself without the costly effort of involving a professional.

-GOOD LUCK!

Heroin, oxy, crack, coke, meth, or MDMA most likely. It could be any of these or even something else. One of the problems is the spoon was likely used repeatedly to "cook" the drug which means the metal was heated up over a hot flame until the drug melted. Depending on the level of heating it could have changed the internal crystalline structure of the metal. At the least it would have had a chemical rection between the drug and the silver - most of these are kinds salts which can react with silver to make a kind of tarnish that could be difficult to remove without some serious polishing, and even then you might not get it to look right. I would suggest doing some mild forms of polishing and if that does not work then ask a silver smith to have a go.

Wow, that was ten years ago! Lots of spoons under the bridge since then. I ended up giving up on that spoon--I decided it was too creepy for a gift (and I never got the stain out).
