I recently purchased 2 silver spoons at an auction. They were marked Hildeburn Bros. and are, I believe, the fiddle pattern. If have been able to find out the Hildeburn Bros. Were in business from 1849 to 1850 in Philadelphia, Pa. How do I find out about them, any suggestions? I can't find anything on the Internet about them either. Any help is appreciated. Guess I don't know how to start looking for information. I would like to know about the company and what all they produced. If any one can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks IP: Logged |

Thanks for that piece of info. It looks like Hildeburn & Co and Hildebrun Bros. was an import export business or shipping company. I was assuming that it was a silversmithing company but maybe not. Would that be common practice to stamp a name on the silver if they were not the makers of the silver, or do we think that they would have been both a silversmithing and a shipping company? I have a lot to learn. IP: Logged |

Very common; you will find flatware marked by general retailers, jewelers, watchmakers, and anyone else likely to sell such goods. Sometimes there is also the actual maker's mark, but often not. IP: Logged |

That is interesting, so you may never know who actually crafted a piece of silver. These spoons as I an looking closer actually have to the right of Hildeburn & Bro. 3 markings within a circle. The middle circle is a W. I can't really tell what the first circle has and the 3rd circle appears to be a head. My eyes aren't good though the only one that I am certain of is the W. Would these markings identify the silversmith? Thanks for your help IP: Logged |

That sounds like a manufacturer's trademark. Many of these false hallmarks (Pseudohalmarks) have not been traced. We would need a photograph. IP: Logged |
