I've noticed some occasional confusion as to the correct terminology for describing the positions of lions and other animals found in hallmarks, so I thought I would post a short glossary.

Rampant - When a lion is standing upright with his two front paws held up in front of his head and one of his hind paws raised up as well

Segreant - When a winged beast such as a griffin or Pegasus is in the rampant position.

Passant - When the lion is walking forward with three legs on the ground and one front paw raised up.

Sejant - When the lion is sitting down on his haunches.

Statant - When the lion is standing with all four paws on the ground.

Couchant - When the lion is lying down on the ground.

Dormant - When the lion is lying on the ground with his head down and is asleep.

Guardant - All of the above terms are for lions that are looking forward. If the lion has his head turned sideways so that he is looking at you then you add the word "guardant" after the first word, as in "rampant guardant".

Regardant - If the lion has his head turned around so that he is looking at his tail then you add the word "reguardant" as in "passant reguardant".
