Thought I'd share this truly strange figurine that Mom gave me a few years ago (I'm a Taurus, shell-collector, and lover of oddities). His body (well, half his body) is made of a murex shell, his belly and extremities are either silver or heavy silverplate, with his head being hollow, looks like he might be a lost-wax casting. Eyes are opaque red glass, base is onyx marble. Can't find any marks on him, pretty sure he's some artist's weird creation. He has great expression and movement, not to mention balance - the only place he's attached to the base is at the tip of his right rear hoof. Measures approx. 4-1/2" long and 2-3/4" tall (not including base). Has anyone ever seen anything like him, or wanted to? Don't worry, I won't be insulted if you mock Bubba, most everyone who sees him does. (Don't care, I like him, makes me smile!)

Yes, I have seen similar things. They were produced by Wiccans for use in Wiccan rituals. The one you have looks to be a 'Bull From the Sea', which refers to a novel by Mary Renault and a Pagan religious concept. Yours may be Hindu, which is very similar to Wicca. Neat piece of silver.

Sounds like this piece may have more power than just that of captivating your whimsy! might the eyes be coral?

biggrin "Doesn't Tiffany have a branch in Dallas . . . ?"

Laughed out loud at that!

Would be nice if Bubba's eyes were coral, but they're definitely very bright red glass.

Dale sent me off on an interesting research binge with his comments. The Hindu god Shiva is closely associated with the bull, and in ancient times was represented as a bull. There's also mention of a Shivaite temple statue of a bull with seashells covering its body. Also some belief that there is a Shivaism connection to Minoan Crete mythology including the symbolic bull, and to other cultures beliefs, including the Celtic pagan horned god and sacred bull. Interesting to read up on Wicca, too. Fascinating stuff!
