Brown-Forman has sold the Lenox unit (includes Gorham, Kirk Stieff and Dansk) to Department 56 for 190 million. This had been expected for many years. IP: Logged |

According to its website, Dept. 56 sells a wide array of "collectibles." Chantilly and Repousse do not go well with the "Krinkles Birthday Collection" or the "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" series. So I wonder if they will continue Lenox's sterling lines, or only produce the collectible-type products like plates and Christmas bells. A number of years ago, I was doing the New York Tabletop show for ONC, and a man came by who was a high-up in United Technologies and he told us that UT had just acquired Gorham as a result of the purchase of another company that UT actually wanted. He said that UT had no idea what to do with a silver company, so they would most likely sell it. I guess Gorham has gone through a few hands since. IP: Logged |

Gorham was owned by Textron for a good while in the 1980s. The sad thing that all this reflects is that the entire American luxury tabletop industry, which was once the largest in the world (glass, porcelain, silverware) has now been telescoped into one lump of multifaceted branding opportunities. Only Tiffany & Co. has retained its own identity, and that at a much reduced level from its heyday. But, of course, this means that the pre-1970 material produced by all of these mushed-together companies is now up to become the "antiques" of the future, and the treasures for future collectors. Tis a weird time to be a curator in many ways. IP: Logged |

Well, "identity" is one thing, but even Tiffany isn't immune from buy-outs and mergers. 1955-Taken over by Hoving Corp. 1979-Merges with Avon. IP: Logged |

And what has happened to the quality of Tiffany's silver in the last 20+ years? Nothing good. [This message has been edited by Richard Kurtzman (edited 07-29-2005).] IP: Logged |
