Hi folks.. A friend of mine wanted a little help with some marks on the bottom of a neat 3 legged salt cellar. Each leg is surmounted with a sphinx. The piece is 2.5" tall. His grandmother was a world traveler. Thanks in advance. Respectfully, Marc Cutcher

This is the state mark of Naples and is Partenope head with 'E' and '8' used between 1823 and 1870's for '883 1/3' foreign silver. Refer: Ugo Donati, I Marchi dell'Argenteria Italiana and Elio & Corrado Catello, I marchi dell'argenteria napoletana. IP: Logged |

Hi there Ozfred, Thanks so much for the answer. Are these reference books available at reasonable prices? My Tardy's "International Hallmarks on Silver" is the most comprehensive world reference book I have besides my British "Jackson" hallmarks book. I, like many of the folks on the SMP site, like to collect reference books as well as silver, and find that reference (marks) books on continental silver are useful, and a little hard to find. Thanks again for your help. Respectfully, Marc Cutcher IP: Logged |

Probably the Net might a good place to start as I don't know if and where either publication might be available. IP: Logged |

I don't see the E here, which wouldn't make sense anyway, since the "E" was used only for imported items, and the maker's mark here - P.SNO - is attributed an unidentified member of the large Sosnio family of Neopolitan silversmiths working in the late 18th-early 19th century. Also, after 1832, the "N" (for "nostrali" or "ours") or the "E" (for "estero" or "foreign") should be directly above the "8". The "N" behind Partenope's head is in the wrong place. Therefore, I think that this is the earlier Partenope mark used from 1824-1832. During this period it was possible for a letter designated a regional assay office to appear behind Partenope, but this should be in the lower left corner. The "N" here I think is probably the distinguishing mark of a particular assay master, who marks genereally appeared behind her head. IP: Logged |
