Just saw this on an auction site. A seller from England is offering punches for sterling and gold carat marks. Imagine the possibilities for mayhem! IP: Logged |

These have been around for years. In the seventies, lots of silverplate had sterling marks added. IP: Logged |

I hope the buyer, if any, of these realizes the seriousness. I suspect that the sale itself may not be illegal, but the use of the punch is technically, I believe treason and may still in certain circumstances be punishable by death. Until recently most offenses of this nature were still punishable by transportation for life. Where to, given the disappearance of the Empire, is a bit debatable - perhaps the Falkland Islands ! A terrible fate and unfair to penguins. Any attempt by the Goldsmiths Company to enforce their rights would be frowned upon, but if the statutes have not been altered their legal right still exists. You can buy these punches from Wholesale Jewelry supply houses. Jewelers need these punches for custom rings and other items they need to mark. Sometimes when a ring is sized down the mark is cut out and the jeweler will restamp it with one of these punches. Unfortunately, sometimes these punches, get into the hands of crooks. IP: Logged |
