[01-2412] As a point of interest there is the occasional souvenir spoon with nicely done hand engraving. I have attached an example. I don't know if these were factory done to order, or done at local jewelers, but can you imagine the cost of having this done today?

Here's another hand engraved one, although yours seems much more elaborate! I keep meaning to look up Jamaica and see if they REALLY have alligators.

Received wisdom says that souvenir spoons were made up by apprentices in local jewelry stores as a way of teaching them engraving, chaseing etc. And how to take a flat picture and engrave it on a concave surface without distortion, a real tricky proposition. Which would explain why ss's vary so much in quality of execution. And why there exists such a profussion of one of a kind spoons. Once had a spoon of a church in Iowa. It was purchased by that church's denomination as the spoon was the only record of the church. Souvenir spoon collection allows for great expansion as there are loads of one of a kind items. As a point of interest, Jamaica doesn't have alligators, but they do have salt water crocodiles. There are fresh-water alligator-like caimans on the South American mainland; I have no idea if there are any of those on Jamaica, but I rather doubt it. IP: Logged |
