    repousse
Is this done before or after the piece is formed? It's hard to imagine some of the elaborate repousse I've seen to be done after the item is formed as it would seem difficult to get at some of the spots.

The decoration on a vessel is usually done after the item has been formed. The areas to be enbossed out can be reached with a snarling iron or specialty hammers with long curved heads. The vessel is then filled with molten pitch and allowed to cool. The chasing work now begins on the surface the pitch provides a firm yet yielding medium to support the silver being worked.

When an applied repoussed decoration needs to be added to a work. The repousse and chasing is done while before it is applied. Some flatware I have seen will have a hollow repousse decoration applied to the handle. Very popular in Scandanavian countries.

This is just the type of question that is perfect for the new Living Silversmiths forum.

The art of repousse or repoussage and chasing can be very time consuming depending on the intricacy of detail and the expertise of the craftsman. It is very satisfying to manipulate and take advantage of the plasticity of silver with punches and chisel like tools to create a three dimensional surface that can delight the eye or tell a story.
