A while ago a friend of mine came across a silverplated GAR canteen that was quite tarnished. There was a beautifully done inscription that was difficult to make out due to the tarnish.

As a silver collector I said "polish it", but Civil War guys said no.

Opinions?

It is an interesting question you pose.

The canteen has more value as a Civil War relic than as an example of silverplate of the period. The buyer of Civil War items is more interested in "as is" items that show age, wear,& tarnish (patina). I would suggest wiping the canteen clean and leaving it alone. As a silversmith and collector I would have to fight the impulse to polish it lightly.
