I am giving a program about my collection of silver napkin rings for my Questers chapter. I have found very little information about the history of napkin rings and would like to learn more. I hope that someone can tell me more about them. Thank you! IP: Logged |

Miss Manner's Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior does cover napkin rings to some extent. Beyond that there are guides to the figural silverplated ones. I don't think I have ever seen much of a treatment of the subject. IP: Logged |

So who has the earliest napkinring? Could it be the 1880s? Or can our members go low, low, low? IP: Logged |

Seeing as there are no takers, I have come across an informative article on the history of the Napkin Ring by Paul J. Fitzpatrick and published in 1963: quote: IP: Logged |

I have seen napkin rings marked coin silver, which would tend towards an earlier date. I suspect that napkin rings were sort of a stepchild of the silver smith's trade. Perhaps they were more often made by jewelers, just a guess. There are Wood & Hughs examples which appear to be early. Today I saw some Medallion napkin rings made by Schultz and Fisher. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Dale and Patrick, for the information. I am getting Miss Manner's book at the library today. I found the Fitzpatrick article several weeks ago and it has been very helpful. I have napkin rings that my grandfather's family used in the 1860s. I so appreciate your comments! IP: Logged |

There is at least one book on the subject, although it is rather narrowly focussed: American-Victorian Figural Napkin Rings, by Victor K Schnadig. IP: Logged |

There is a book Figural Napkin Rings Collector's Identification and Value Guide by Lillian Gottschalk and Sandra Whitson, Collector Books, 1996. This book is full of photographs of themed napkin rings with valuations. In the Introduction, the authors state that the "date when the first figural napkin rings were produced is uncertain, but for the most part they were mass produced between 1869 and the turn of the century." In "Antique Collecting", vol 15, No 2, June 1980, Ole Lachmann wrote about "Silver Napkin Rings". In this article, which is accompanied by 61 photos of napkin rings, the author states:

Many thanks to Swarter and Patrick Street for telling me about the books. I think they will be very helpful. I appreciate your suggestions. IP: Logged |
