I have a pair of crystal/glass salt shakers with sterling tops. I was cleaning one and I noticed a white clay-like substance inside the innermost ring. I accidently scraped it out not knowing what it was, but now the sterling top won't fit, it's got nothing binding it to the glass top. Is this standard procedure or did someone make these to dupe me? Thanks

It's likely that you removed a thin layer of plaster of Paris, which was commonly used to fix silver mounts onto glass and ceramics.

Thanks so much for the info. Do you recommend that I take this in to be professionally re-mounted or can I use plaster of paris or something else and do the job myself?

That's your call really, however if you do want to do it yourself, make sure you use a reversible adhesive (as is plaster of Paris), so that if it goes awry, you have another option.
