Hello. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between "nickle silver" and "coin silver"? I usually collect silverplate and sterling, but have come across a few pieces with nickle or coin on them. Are they even real silver? Thank you for any help........Benji IP: Logged |

Nickel silver is a nickel alloy with no real silver. Sometimes it is plated, i.e: EPNS Coin silver is real silver, although 90% pure as opposed to 92,5% pure for sterling. This lower standard was popular in North America where much silver was obtained from melting down coins. It was largely phased out in the latter 19th century and now sterling is the norm. Thank you so much. I see items marked with nickle or coin and never really understood what it meant. IP: Logged |
