Hi This is my first posting and I have a question. I'm a museum studies student do treatment on a silver artifact and can find no information concerning the maker of my particular object. It is a sterling silver spoon about about 4" long. It is stampted with the London hallmark and Lion passant for 1891-1895. The maker's mark is I.A.D, which I can't find listed anywhere. Can someone help me? IP: Logged |

Welcome to the silver forum Conservationgirl! Trying to identify markings without a photo is really difficult and rarely results in definitive responses. Could you please take a moment to read the page on how to post photos and do your best to share one with us. If the mark is so worn that you can not get a useful image, you might try putting a piece of thin paper over the mark and rubbing it gently with the edge of a pencil, or even just doing your artistic best to draw a representation and posting this. I'm sure we would all also appreciate any additional information you might like to share with us on how your studies into silver conservation are going and any new techniques for silver conservation that are being taught these days. I do have pictures of it, but not of the mark. I don't really have access to the object right now so I cant' do a rubbing. If anyone has a question about silver conservation though I'll do my best to answer it. IP: Logged |

A clear photo or two of the spoon would be a start, at least until you can get a closeup of the hallmarks and maker's mark. In the meantime, would you share with us the current best practices they are teaching you on dealing with silver sulfide or silver chloride on old silver - especially cases where the reaction has gone deeper than just the surface? Thanks. IP: Logged |
