[26-0744] Hi, I have two teapots which have some damage and could probably benefit from some quality restoration. The first dates from 1777 and the second from 1714. The first pot has a poor repair, probably done with lead solder on what I presume was the seam of the spout. The second has small damage right beneath the rim and I don't know what kind of filling techniques would be used to repair this and whether or not the patina on the rest of the pot could be matched. My only experience with silver restoration has been less than satisfactory. If anyone knows of any really good restorers in this area I would be very appreciative. Thanks,

What area are you in? We have folks from all over the world in these forums. You surely need to have proper repairs done to both of your coffeepots. You might talk to a local museum to see who they use for silver conservation. The big auction houses in NYC also offer conservation services. IP: Logged |

David it is hard to really tell what is going on from your images, but briefly: old lead repairs can be reversed with dilute muriatic acid to remove the lead and then a proper hard solder (silver solder) repair can be done. The other sounds straight forward, but without seeing it I'm not sure if it would need a patch or just careful tweeking (old silversmiths term for delicate straightning) before soldering. Both would under go a color change (not patina) and the handles would have to be removed, but done well it should only be obvious to the experts. The society of American silversmiths is a good place to start. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Hi agleopar, Thank you for the reference and the info. I will follow up on it. Since you appear to have some knowledge in this area would you have any personal recommendations with regards to a restorer? I am in Connecticut, USA, but could ship the pots anywhere. My idea would be to send the first one out as a 'test' because the second is worth quite a bit more and I'd hate to have the job bungled. Thanks again IP: Logged |
