Can you sell scrap sterling silver ? (I have a lot of broken, bent, hallmark unreadable etc} If so how do you sell it ? what would be the price per ounce or by the pound ? Where or who buys it ?
(I know where you can buy scrap aluminum and even scrap gold)
THANKS

Most cities of any size -- and many smaller ones even -- have at least one scrapper (the common term for someone who buys scrap silver and gold). If you ask around antiques dealers they can usually point you to someone who does this; some of them will also buy scrap, or broker the deal for you. In a larger city, if you have large amounts, you can sometimes deal directly with a smelter, who will melt down your pile of metal, assay it, and pay you accordingly. I used to see scrappers in the yellow pages under something like 'Precious Metals - Buying', but just checked mine here and found no such listing. That's not definitive, though, since we don't have a regular scrapper here, and the one 40 miles away may have just stopped advertising here.

You'll also sometimes see newspaper ads for traveling buyers -- the 'we buy everything' sort of ad, people who set up in a hotel room to buy whatever valuables people bring in. Some of these people are honest, some not so much, so it's good to be sure of what you have before you take it in. Of course that holds always!

Do you know if it is sold by the pound ? Do you have a ballpark figure of how much per pound? Have looked on the net. Can't find anything.

Silver traditionally is sold by the Troy ounce, lately by grams. Look up Spot Silver on the net. That will give you an idea. Pounds are not used in weighing silver: Troy ounces or grams are.

Just a question, why do you think this is only fit for scrap?

I have quite a few pieces of flatware with no handles like knife blades, spoon bowls etc.

The pieces have either broken off or on some you can see where they were attached. I have some silver pieces that the hallmarks are unreadable, at most you can make out is the word sterling or just blurs. Some are so seriously bent there is a crease where someone tried to straighten them out. I have silver trays that were much used with dings dents and one looks like it was used for a cutting board. If you can think of another use for them plz plz tell me. This is five generations worth.

Thanks

Most coin dealers buy scrap. If you can't find anyone nearby, ebay is a good place to sell scrap. Just make sure you have an accurate weight listed. I have seen it done a few times.

Silver refiners usually require a minimum weight - some as high as 1000 troy ounces - to smelt a job. Most charge around a 25 cent per ounce refining fee in addition to 3% commission of spot. Silver is $7.58 a troy ounce today. You can even have them smelt your silver into wafers or ingots for a fee. Definitely do some shopping.
