The following is from a circa 1890 Gorham catalogue. With these we can do both The Challenge and The Whatzit? games.

Perhaps no one is guessing because these are known by all? Or is everyone stumped? Or are you politely giving everyone else a chance to be first? IP: Logged |

Desk and pocket stamp wetters? Or mole holders? [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 12-12-2005).] IP: Logged |

Well, the top one looks like a tissue box cover, but A) they didn't exist in 1890, and B) judging from the detail, it's something much smaller. I'd guess maybe a chain slide, but if that's it I didn't know they were marketed separately from the chain. The bottom one looks simply like a locket, but again I suspect the scale is something much smaller than the typical locket. But unless it's for moles/patches, as salmoned suggested, I don't have a guess. IP: Logged |

Hint: The square is aprox. 25 x 25x 25mm They are still made and sold today (in sterling & silverplate). I have seen them in the US and UK. IP: Logged |

Well, it's quite obvious that these are thingamabobbers. IP: Logged |

Being a bit of a snooker tragic, I can't help thinking that the top items are "chalk holders" (for want of a better phrase) for snooker and billiard cues. Waylander IP: Logged |

Are the top ones for holding hair? When a woman brushed her hair and cleaned the brush afterwards she could put the hair in the box through hole in the top and thus save it? Are the bottom ones lockets for holding hair and seeing it through little glass or rock crystal windows in the middle of them? In Victorian times a curl or maybe a braided design made with hair was a common keepsake to give someone so I am thinking these may be something along these lines. IP: Logged |

Initial thought was coin holders, can't say I've seen square ones, but that's my guess anyway. Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |

I go with the chalk holder idea. IP: Logged |

Okay, I think the Aussies might be right! The square ones are definitely the right size for cue chalk. The others used as watch fobs? If so, would there be a manufactured disk of chalk to fit or would you have to shape your own? Cheryl ;o) [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 12-13-2005).] IP: Logged |

My guess is that these are for knotting scarves (scarfs?). The scarf fabric is pushed through the hole and makes a join sort of like with bolo ties. Anyway, I suspect fabric. IP: Logged |

I think KIMO is right with the hair catcher idea for the boxes with holes and the lockets are for holding the woven hair. I believe that there was a cottage industry of weavers for this purpose. IP: Logged |

Other than size considerations I think all of the answers were great. Chalk Boxes is what they are. I believe the lowers two most likely didn’t sell well as fobs ... you know what a pain chalk dust is on your suite. Here is a contemporary example:
