[01-2506] More puzzlement. These are wonderful quality and could date anywhere from 1880 to 1910 I guess, but the maker's mark -so well drawn and distinctive has beaten me completely. I just love the shell and pepper on the feet to distinguish salt and pepper! Someone must know! - Who knows who when and where? Help Help Help! IP: Logged |

Is there a hall mark? Are they provincial or French...? They have agreat feel about them but perhaps they are not from the English arts and craft movement? IP: Logged |

This is the only mark and it is huge, struck on a plate on the underside of the salts - the mark is some 1/2" from top to bottom! The salts are made from silver of high purity and could well not be British - but where are they from? They are certainly hand-made and, as you can see, of a very good and strong design. Too sophisticated to be by an amateur in my view. IP: Logged |

Dumb comment, but here goes: is this a mark of Marshall Field? Field's silver shop made a wide range of pieces, and had some quirky marks AIR. Many of the smiths who worked there were from all over Europe, so this could be a 'remembered' piece. Just a thought. IP: Logged |

Not so dumb; I had the same thought! The Marshall Fields craft shop did make some pieces that were reminiscent of old European silver, but I would expect it to be marked with some sort of standard. Do we know for sure that it is solid silver? The mark does look like something one would find on plated wares. Brent IP: Logged |

Certainly silver and high grade (sterling or better) at that. I too thought that the mark, which could be MP rather than MF, looked more suited to either copper or silver plate - but in this case it isn't! IP: Logged |
