Hello,

Its been a long time since I have been here. It appears I will be a Newbie forever.

I have a "what is it" and hope someone out there knows. Its length is 1-1/4 inches and its hollow, including the tip, needle like.

The marks are illegible but I will post them anyway. I tried this little while ago but I think I used the wrong password. It didn't post.

Thank you very much
pbanz

Hi pbanz,

Straight off, I don't know, but it is very interesting. Is there any chance you could try another photograph of the marks (through a magnifying glass perhaps?? - I've often found this useful - moving the magnifying glass in/out as well as the zoom on the camers, can often produce a decent picture).

From first principles, I'd suspect this is some form or medical implement...some fluid is introduced to the item and it is then inserted into some part of the body(?) ..gruesome, but if we had a sense of the date, it might assist in determining whether this was a primitive medical instrument. I'm ruling out an oiling can or other tradesman's tool because it is silver and hallmarked.

Very interesting...I hope someone can shed light on this.

Kind rgds,

Tom

Thanks for the response Tom.

Unfortunately, the scan is like looking at the real piece. Looking through the loupe does not help any either. We still cannot make it out.

I have never tried a magnifying glass and a camera and will have to try that.

I agree with you on this piece maybe being a medical item.

I will work on a different picture next week.

Thanks again
paul

Paul,

You are very welcome, although I was of little practical assistance. If your experiments with a magnifying glass and zoom-lens work out, please post them and hopefully someone will be able to help.

Kind rgds,

Tom

Hi Pbanz,

I think TBC may be correct in the assumption that this is some sort of medical implement. My guess is perhaps a drainage or blood letting tool. Indeed gruesome, but fascinating!

Could the marking be an alphanumeric code in the format of Tx-## ? It looks to me like it could be TI-86, or something like that. If so, then that is a maker's code for Taxco, Mexico, post-1979.

HI!

Somewhere I've seen this type of instrument before, (perhaps on this forum)?

I seem to recall it may have had a medical use or sewing?

Will keep trying to remember, even though it does remind me of a Hershey's kiss.
