We had a discussion a while back (that I couldn't find now) on how to get people, especially younger people, interested in silver. While in Richmond last weekend I revisited the Jerome and Rita Gans Collection at the Virginia Museum of FIne Arts, and found a gallery (and publication) that bears on this issue that I had forgotten about. As part of that exhibit (and it should be noted, at the specific request of Rita Gans) there's a side exhibit called "Discover Silver!" with a series of hands-on activities geared towards kids - although I've always seen many adults there as well enjoying it. They also produced a "Family Guide" brochure that can be taken away (free!) that has similar information and activities. It talks about where silver comes from, different kinds of uses, the history of silverwares and styles, silversmithing and marking, etc. An always popular part is the comparison of silver items and their modern analogues (like salt cellars and a salt & pepper set, a candlestick and a lamp). There's even a stand where one can handle pewter, silverplate, and sterling pieces and try to identify which is which. Both the exhibit and the brochure are really well done, and I'd encourage anyone visiting the Richmond area to take a look for ideas to help spread our addiction. IP: Logged |

Well, lets think about how you can do it. Appeal to something they like. They usually (boys more than girls...they like jewelry, start there), could care less about spoons etc. flatware in general. If they like sports start with trophies.......very few places show them, though now dealers are starting to do so. Then work your way back. As I mentioned before, I sometimes use it in terms of history one son loves the Revolutionary & Civil Wars, if I get a piece from that era it relates. He loves Lincoln, I tell him what silver he had (Mary anyway). My other son ......music......& I tell him about the instruments made of silver and how it effects the quality of improving the sound etc........go from there. The other son, we'll he's the sports guy......no need to go further, he has been in the company of the best of the silver Trophies. Now there's my new Grandson........he is still toooooo little but I have given him his Tiffany pieces, he'll learn quickly if I have anything to say about it. As for me I started late in life & am so sorry it took me so long, but I had no teacher! As they say on TV Be a mentor! By all means start with what they love & try & put it together finding the silver connection. That's my 2 cents for today. Jersey IP: Logged |

Sterling ipods and blackberries might do the trick. IP: Logged |

Maybe those aren't too far off, June. Wallace already made that silver-plated computer mouse, and Nokia makes the astonishingly expensive Vertu line of cell phones, the cases of which are handmade out of gold and platinum (not sure if they have a silver one). IP: Logged |

One impulse behind my collection of silver calling-card cases was the hope that I'd find one the right size for my ipod. So far none of them is--and they don't have the proper holes for the earphones and controls--but who knows? Maybe Steve Jobs will announce an ipod specially made to fit the Gorham curvy-sided models. A girl can dream. (Not that I'm a young person. Not by a mile.) IP: Logged |

quote: I've seen a number of ipods so shod (this is Southern California, after all). The two best were an Arts & Crafts inspired all-over hammered design with Shreve's strapwork and a japanesque one with an etched dragon and silk cords. IP: Logged |

I have seen a lot of people my age who use cigarette cases to hold credit cards, IDs, and cash. However they are nearly always the chintzy, chrome-plated affairs you can buy new at cheap stores or on the street for like $10. I would think with all the interest in retro clothes and accessories, especially among the hipsters, they would go a step further and seek out vintage silver examples which are fairly plentiful and not too expensive, but maybe they just don't know they're available. Hey, wev, I'd love to see some examples of the Arts & Crafts ipods. I know Alan Adler made a sterling mouse a few years back. IP: Logged |

Hi Paul and Polly, I do a little business selling old sterling, coin, and plated calling card cases for folding money, credit cards and business cards. And there are folks out there who ask... But usually the price is a little high to buy one on a whim, so I steer them towards the cigarette cases, which can be very deco.. I have not heard of one for an ipod, but if you will post a photo and dimensions of yours, I would be happy to look through my card cases and boxes and see if I have any that come close to being the right size. Marc: Now I am kicking myself that I sold a Lebolt cigarette case with a slight hole in one corner-it would have been PERFECT for an IPod case-could have run the cord for the ear buds right out of it! This is a bit off topic, but I was perusing an antiques related website and found a posting about a website dedicated to calling card cases, put together by collectors. I am guessing that those who collect them may know the site, but I thought I'd share it with others-there are some really beautiful examples and a section of the site dedicated to specific collections. It can be found at www.thecardcaseforum.co.uk. IP: Logged |
