[01-2544] This is from an item being listed at auction as a Victorian sterling teapot. However, the term "applied mounts" makes me suspect, so is the pot sterling or not? I think this is something that could use clarification in a more general sense. (I have no interest in it otherwise).

My guess would be that the body is sterling but that the mounts are not necessarily so. But without seeing the piece itself it would be hard to say.... IP: Logged |

Is the inside smooth, or does it show signs of embossing? It looks like the decorative elements have been (cast? and) soldered on; i.e. applied to the body. IP: Logged |

so 'applied mounts' only refers to the fact that the decoration was separately cast then attached. IP: Logged |

Separately made adornments added to objects are considered to be applied to the surface. The mug and coconut cup in this thread ("Lord" Bertie's Mug) are considered silver mounted, so the added elements aresilver mounts. So it follows that that is what is being referred to as "applied mounts." IP: Logged |

This appears to be a generic Colonial Revival pot with applied baroque or francis type decoration. It probably had several different types of mounts that were available to suit different tastes. Wonderful summary of 'applied mounts' swarter. IP: Logged |
