Can anyone point me to a good discussion of women's involvement in silver craft, especially historically? IP: Logged |

A good account, at least as far as Britain and the USA is concerned, can be found in the book "Women Silversmiths 1685-1845" by Philippa Glanville, pub. by Thames and Hudson, 1990. It should be fairly readily available in the USA (or anywhere by the internet). IP: Logged |

The only book I know of that is devoted exclusively to women silversmiths is The National Museum of Women in the Arts publication; Women Silversmiths 1685-1845 by Philippa Granville and Jennifer Faulds Goldborough. This museum has a website. Most likely it would be interesting to contact them directly for additional resource material. IP: Logged |

Do you mean as practising silversmiths or as owners/managers/etc? IP: Logged |

Thanks! I'll look for those books. I wondered (and should have said) whether there was a thread on the topic. I did a search, but didn't turn up anything useful. I'm just generally curious--someone in a recent thread mentioned that the hand burnising a spoon was usually female, which made me wonder about women's role in the craft/business. IP: Logged |
