Paul Lemieux Posts: 1792 Registered: Apr 2000	posted 03-07-2007 08:51 PM It isn't quite as fabulous as one of those Gorham ice bowls, but here is a circa 1870 ice cream slice with Arctic decoration. The blade features an engraved scene with icebergs, icicles, a seal, and a ship. The top of the handle features icicles as well (in addition to a monogram removal ). This item is merely stamped STERLING, with no maker or retailer marks to help me identify its producer. IP: Logged

I am fascinated by how what is going on in the world at any point in time acts as such a catalyst for artistic designs. The keen interest in arctic motifs in the mid 19th century was driven by well publicized arctic expeditions, not to mention William Seward's securing of Alaska for the United States. IP: Logged
