[01-2552] Check out the February 2007 issue of the Magazine Antiques for the article by Robert McCracken Peck titled Icy Embellishments: Arctic Imagery and the Decorative Arts. There are some fabulous pieces of silver included. Perfect subject matter for an almost zero day in New York City. Brrrrr... IP: Logged |

It isn't quite as fabulous as one of those Gorham ice bowls, but here is a circa 1870 ice cream slice with Arctic decoration. The blade features an engraved scene with icebergs, icicles, a seal, and a ship. The top of the handle features icicles as well (in addition to a monogram removal ). This item is merely stamped STERLING, with no maker or retailer marks to help me identify its producer.

This is Reed & Barton. It sits on my desk as a pen holder. It seems particularly appropriate fare for the icy mess that sits outside my door tonight here in Maine!

Thanks to you both for sharing some examples of Arctic motif silver. I am fascinated by how what is going on in the world at any point in time acts as such a catalyst for artistic designs. The keen interest in arctic motifs in the mid 19th century was driven by well publicized arctic expeditions, not to mention William Seward's securing of Alaska for the United States. IP: Logged |
