[01-2559] This is an unmarked bottle stopper. The wild boar itself is one and five-eighths inches long and one inch tall, and the entire stopper weighs sixty-three grams. Anybody ever come across any stoppers like this one? Is it associated with a particular distiller? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Is it possible that this was originally the top for a walking stick or a cane ? IP: Logged |

Hello Bascall! There are several companies in the U.K. that I know of that sell figural silver bottle stoppers. A simple search will bring them up. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Yes, I've seen a variety on the market from different producers outside the UK as well, including some in 'white metal' rather than silver. I believe the designs are intended to appeal to differnt buyers' interests, rather than relate to a distiller or brand. IP: Logged |

These replies are all truly appreciated. Clive, you may be correct. The cork was broken, so I pulled it out and found that there are threads on the inside, and now I'm searching for walking sticks with decorative finials along this line. I will follow up if I learn anymore about this great little wild boar. Thank you, IP: Logged |

Off topic: I startled a small group of wild boar [which bore a striking resemblance to your stopper] while hiking in the soggy hills of Aiea yesterday, a fortuitous meeting so early in the Chinese 'Year of the Boar'. IP: Logged |

quote: Sounds a little dangerous! Just so happens, I spent three years in Pearl Harbor which is in the area of Aiea Bay I believe, from 1964 to 1967. And back to the topic: I have now seen some walking stick finials along the lines of this one. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 02-22-2007).] IP: Logged |
