I've just acquired a rare leather bound catalog that is in need of restoration; The covers are tearing away from the spine. Can anyone recommend a book restorer in the general NYC area?

Hi Richard. Likewise, I am not able to give you a specific reference for New York, but I can say that unless you have had such work done for you recently, and I assume you have not since you are seeking a recommendation, then you should prepare yourself for some serious sticker shock. I looked into having an old leather bound family book restored last year and it opened my eyes. What I quickly learned is that a skilled artist spend many hours putting a book back to rights with 99% hand labor - there is almost no machine work involved. The cost will also depend on how much restoration you would like done and whether you want an accurate restoration using the original materials, a replacement binding, or just a quick patching up with a couple dabs of glue and a few stitches. On the upside, a good restorer can make even a ratty looking book look amazing - not only with the covers but with staining, foxing, tears, mold and mildew, etc. etc. Let us know how it goes.

No specific leads, but for the best values in leather binding try Spain. I've known several people over the years who regularly ship books over for binding, and I've also bought some rebound from Spanish dealers. The quality is superb, and the prices tend to be far lower than elsewhere (although it's possible that's changing with the unification of markets under the EU).

One can also try universities that have book conservation programs, usually as part of a library school. There often are students willing to take on some work on the side, and you can look at some of their previous work to see if it's up to what you want.

Thanks all. I think that I may have found someone. Has anyone heard of or had any experience with FineBinding.com located in Manhattan?
