This is perhaps old news -- I am more turtle than hare -- but Google now has US Patents online. The images and header transcriptions are sometimes iffy, but you can use normal Google search patterns, which is a vast improvement over the page-by-page hunting of the Patent Office. You can always find via Google, then use find by number on the Office site for a better download. IP: Logged |

Wow. This is great! I tried several times to use the US patent office site and it is just so cumbersome I gave up. This is far easier and much more fun! By the way, I just gained access to this terrific data base called American Historic newspapers. It is from 1690-1920. It is incredible what they have now digitalized. For example, I have some Theophilus Bradbury spoons. When doing geneology research I threw in a name and 'voila' up came my ancestor AND Theophilus both running for a city office in 1796! So, now I am pretty darned sure where those spoons came from. It is so much fun. Do you have access to that data base, wev? It is awesome. All the advertisements are in there, etc. IP: Logged |

The London Times also has all its back issues ( from 1785) on a website but it costs serious money to use it. I have access and will give any help I can to enquiries from SMP members on this site IP: Logged |

Might sound generous, but in fact my old library has not remembered to delete my access codes, so I get it free at present. I do not intend to remind them. Very interesting the old copies are too !!! IP: Logged |

WEV advice is right on using Google® to find a patent number. Sometimes one has to then go to the Patent Office’s site to download the image as the Google® image is not always the best. For some reason a number of the images leave out necessary detail. In any event it is a nice addition for searching. The U.S. Patent Office had at one time a public search room with hard copies of all the patents arranged by class and subclass. If one wanted to view all design patents in Class D7-subclass 642 PLACE SETTING, TABLE SERVICE UTENSIL OR HANDLE THEREFOR one simply went to the box in which the patents were stored. The boxes were called “shoes” and the Patent Office had comfortable tables and chairs where one could take the shoes look at all the patents at your leisure. One could even visit with the Patent Examiner charged with examining applications in a class you were interested in and ask questions about patents or other prior art that they thought might be pertinent to your question. Clive, what a generous offer indeed. I would love it if you would search my sterling interests of "sterling ring boxes". many of mine are of English origin. Let me know if you need particulars for this search. Thanks so much in advance. IP: Logged |
