Has anyone else recently recovered from head trauma after falling out of their chair? $10,368.00 for a Kentucky silver julep cup! I know Southern silver goes higher than comparable Northern silver but this one must be made of platinum or someone definitely knows something I do not know. IP: Logged |

Well, it is a scarce and desirable maker, and it is Mark Boultinghouse selling. That's going to help. Apparently there were three bidders who felt it was pretty extraordinary. Don't expect most juleps, even Kentucky, to go near that in price! IP: Logged |

On occasion, I have seem some go for about half that but generally they seem to sell like any other similarly marked/weighted antique. This one must of had a provenance of interest to the bidders. IP: Logged |

Sometimes it is best to let the market place decide on the price. IP: Logged |

A high sale can be aberrent - all it takes is two bidders with unlimited resources who want something badly enough to bid above the market value. They are obviously not dealeers planning a resale anytime soon, unless they are bidding on anonymous customer instructions. Additionally, I have noticed that eBay's new hidden bidder policy seems to have resulted in new winning bidders appearing, often on higher priced items - they may not have wanted to be seen as underbidders in the past. swarter, What you may be seeing is bidders opening new accounts or using dormant accounts to disguise their bidding. IP: Logged |

I finally had a chance to look up the maker of this cup in Boultinghouse’s book and from what is reported there I would agree that it is an aberration, perhaps caused in part by the rarity of Stephens’s work (he was in business for a very short time). If there is a difference in what is paid for collectibles verses antiques this may highlight the difference. I also wonder if Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Kentucky caused the level of local pride in things from Kentucky to rise to the point that this was a must have at any price. IP: Logged |

The problem with the Potter books is that there must be a blue-zillion of them by now. IP: Logged |

Only so many first editions, but the sheer volume of other printings may keep the price down. One good effect of the hidden bidder policy that Swarter referred to is that one will not get phony second chance offers that are often sent out on higher priced items. IP: Logged |
