Seeking Moderator support, Contributing Editors, Archival Annalists & new posts

SSF members are very humbled by our moderators & the depth of their knowledge. We are grateful for all that they do and share.

What may not be apparent to everyone is the amount of behind the scenes work that goes on to keep the SSF SPAM free, civil & the open venue it is. SSF operational demands on the moderators has steadily increased. Many of the moderators are finding that they don't have the same amount time to commit that they once did. This is most evident in the low measure of new posts/treads being started by moderators.

The moderators, individually and collectively, could use more assistance. So we are asking members (including all of the lurkers) to step up in any way. We could used more Contributing Editors and Archival Annalists. Suggestions are always welcomed (remember to put the word silver into any email's subject line or your message might be lost to the SPAM filters. Info@SMPub.com )

Silver Magazine would also be interested in seeing more of our interesting current & past threads edited into printable stories. Silver Magazine doesn't pay much but they do pay something and you will get a byline in the leading print publication about silver.

The broader subject is that the SSF is a membership site. It is you, the membership, that drives what happens at the SSF. As members it is really up to you to stimulate new discussion and to revive past discussions.

The body of information on our SSF site goes back to 1999 (over 26 million hits). The daily rate at which new members sign up remains steady and this rate has been the same for several years. New posts are not as frequent as in years past. Why? The initial conclusions are that the archival /legacy posts are answering most new members questions and as such are not stimulating new discussion. If you find one of our older posts helpful please let everyone know.

Many us have put up posts which haven't generated discussion. Sometimes it takes a few years before the post gets noticed. If you have an idea for a new discussion thread, please post it. As long as the post is SSF relevant and might be of interest to a new or experienced collector, it will be welcomed.

Thanks

Lately I have been very busy and unable to visit the forums regularly. However, I would be very interested in editing threads for use in Silver Magazine if we can decide on one or some that would be of interest to them.

Our Silver Magazine members are generally interested in seeing subjects/threads at the Silver Salon Forum evolve in articles. Because Silver Magazine is their business and in deference of our Guidelines they don't ask (or rarely ask). Especially since refining posts into a printable articles is work and the stipends they offer (if at all) are very small ... so efforts to move forward in this regard tends to be slow.

In one of the offline forums (which you are member) there hasn't been any discussion since 05-14-2007. In that forum many good ideas were batted around. I and the other moderators can't do alone, so those good ideas or other new ideas needs to be championed by others. You?

I would suggest that you and other members participating in the offline forum Silver Caucus Room SMR discussion revisit what has been discussed and see if anything makes sense to revive. Or make new suggestions. Current participants are: Paul Lemieux, swarter, FWG, Richard Kurtzman, blakstone, Silver Lyon, dsix, carlaz, Dale, wev, jprice33. Others may participate please email me (info@SMPub.com) and make sure the subject line says Silver Salon - SMR or your message will be lost to the SPAM bucket.

Be this as it may, in a up coming Silver Magazine (March/April) issue there will an article that sprang from a thread between members. The members realized they had a good subject set up and contacted Silver Magazine about making it an article. See: English papboat - American owners??

Also Silver Magazine has been very agreeable about letting us post (subject to prior approval) past Silver Magazine articles. It takes a lot of work to make an article into a post... An example of an Silver Magazine article made into a post:
Unger Brothers brooches - Silverphiles Beware!

Hi Scott

I sent you an email about 2 days after you refreshed it. I guess it didn't get thru to you. If you are still looking for volunteers, let me know.

Chase33 (Robert),

I sometimes don't see all the emails because we get a lot of spam. I went back to the spam bucket and found your message.

Help is always appreciated. What would you like to do? If you want to continue via email please make sure the subject starts with Silver.

Members it would help me if more of you learned how to use the Forum Code tags (click here for WHAT IS UBB CODE?).

For example:
OK:

Better: more helpful
  • click here for WHAT IS UBB CODE?

This not only looks nicer but it provides the subject to the link. Providing the subject/topic of the link is especially helpful when links/posts get moved or when the link's URL changes. It provides me with a chance to search for the subject/topic of the link so I may fix the broken link.
