Above is a nutmeg grater that my wife brought years ago. It is an unmarked grater that is a simply made tube with one end closed and the other end having a pull cap attached to the grater. John Davis in The Robert and Meredith Green Collection of Silver Nutmeg Graters book describes this form as one of the early types appearing from 1680 to 1710. The engraving on our grater indicates that it is much later and seems to me to be from the 1840s or 50s.

Although nutmeg was enjoyed for years as an interesting spice the last chapter of Green's book discusses the toxic effects of nutmeg. He reports that doses of 5 Gm. or more produces a marked depressive action on the central nervous system. The clinical course may be severe, with coma, shock and acidosis as its main features.

Nutmeg was used in early punches and perhaps it was not the alcohol that causes headaches the next day, but too much nutmeg.

Type in inchem and enter nutmeg on the search box. It is an international program on chemical safety and sponsored by various intergovenmental bodies.
