On the SMP main home page there is a section called A Collector's View®:
quote:
It seems as if there is a collector for everything. It takes a collectors view to discover the unique, interesting, bizarre and fascinating aspects of everyday objects.

Since the wide spread use of digital cameras it is now easier than ever and inexpensive to create an image library of one's collections. Using the digital camera's closeup features to highlight what you find of special interest provides expanded appreciation.

If you have a collection or part of a collection and would like to share it please let us know. You can share anonymously or use your SSF User ID or use your real name.

If you supply the photos and a little explanation we will consider putting it together into a slide presentation like we did for:

Let us know.

I probably have enough pieces for one about bug motifs on jewelry/silver. Would this be of interest to anyone?

To June, Myself, and many of our lurkers it would be very interested and appreciative --- maybe it will bring some of the lurkers into the light.

Bring on the bugs! I have a few bugs myself that I'd be happy to share when you do.

I would love to see your collection of bug ornamented metal. A bit back I created a study of a beetle in copper using repousse. Bugs are facinating.

I am delighted there is so much enthusiasm for the idea of a Collector's View about bugs. Right now I am working on text and photos to send to Scott so he can create the slide show. It sounds like several of our other members have insect items in their collections. If you have an insect item you would like to contribute to the slide show, please post photos and text here so we can include it with the pieces I am sending Scott.

Paul, this is great. Your identifications are nearly as correct as could be, given the representations, but I have a few suggestions even so:

#4 is a beetle, as you suggest, probably a Cockchafer

#5 is not a dragonfly - it has only 2 wingw and 2 long anal cerci. It is not an accurate reprenentation of anything I can think of, but probably represents a Mayfly (which has 4 wings that look like 2}

#15 looks more like a cricket than a grasshopper, but is not that accurate a portrayal

#20 the bird is a Heron (probably a Great Blue Heron), not a Crane

#36 has two Cicadas, in addition to the ant. It reminds me of a portrayal of the grasshopper and the ant allegory, but the bugs are clearly Cicadas.

Nice collection.

What a brilliant example - thank you both very much for something informative and entertaining, and beautifully photographed. Congratulations!

swarter,

Paul requested that I add your suggestions to #4, 5, 15 & 20. How did I do?

15 & 20 are ok

4 "(a beetle)" rather than "(a beetle-like insect)"

5 delete "dragonfly (Mayfly?)" substitute "Mayfly"

Thanks

In photo 18, your 'creature seeming to have a kangaroo's head and manatee's body' is actually a snail. I really enjoyed the slide-show.

Edit - Okay, a poorly drawn snail...

I thought snail at first, but the ears, pointy snout, and what look like fins made me wonder...
