Silversmiths, Would it be possible to inscribe a ring like one of Edison's wax cylinders, so that if it were put on a slowly spinning lathe and a needle were held against it, it would play back (for instance) the sound of a bride or bridegroom saying "I do"? IP: Logged |

In theory it would be very easy to do using a laser. The Library of Congress already uses a scanning laser reader for old wax cylinders and 78s too frail to play on old machines. IP: Logged |

I guess it would probably be better with a harder material than silver--you wouldn't want your vows to wear away too quickly. IP: Logged |

Possible, yes, practical, no. It'd be more practical to put a small recording/playback device (similar to those in the newly advertised greeting cards) on a ring's bezel. IP: Logged |
